Encryption of our data and communication is playing an increasingly important role in our everyday lives. This also applies to the use of WhatsApp.
Every day, we reveal a lot about ourselves through communication on WhatsApp. No, no one has anything to hide. Nevertheless, I’ll show you today how you can store your WhatsApp backups encrypted.
Why we Need Encryption
WhatsApp and most of the apps we use every day store our data in a centralized way. This centralization means that hackers only have to attack one place to steal data from millions of users. Last but not least, data leaks also lead to users’ data being exposed. The same applies to cloud services where we upload our media and backups. For this reason, encryption and encrypted transmission of data is an imperative for security on the Internet.
How to Enable Encrypted WhatsApp backups
WhatsApp can be accused of many things: The fact that they provide their users with tools to protect their data is certainly not one of them. Recently, the possibility of encrypting backups was rolled out to all users.
Encrypt backups – this is how to do it step by step
First, make sure that you have the latest version of WhatsApp installed. After opening WhatsApp, proceed as follows:
- Open the settings
- Tap on Chats
- Tap on Chat Backup
- Now select end-to-end encrypted backup
- Now tap on Next and follow the instructions to create a key
- Important: Choose a secure password and don’t forget it!
After tapping Done, the backup will be created. This may take some time depending on your device. Make sure that your device has enough battery power. You will need the created key to restore your backup or to deactivate the encryption.
