Canon Pixma Error Codes E04, E05, E14, E15 – How to fix – The Canon Pixma E04, E05, E14 and E15 error codes are displayed when a Canon Pixma inkjet printer has problems detecting one or more cartridges. The official Canon text describing the error is “The FINE cartridge cannot be detected”. However, you may also see these messages when using refilled or remanufactured Canon ink cartridges that do not bear the Canon “FINE” logo. However, this does not mean that you have to use a brand new Canon cartridge in your printer, only for your printer to have trouble identifying the installed cartridge as compatible.
Your Canon printer uses a series of gold ink contacts on the front of the cartridge as its only point of contact with the cartridge. If these contacts are obscured by dirt, ink, or natural oils from your hands, this may cause this message to occur. It may even be that the contacts have been damaged (visibly or otherwise) during handling of the cartridge.
In any case, I would recommend performing the basic troubleshooting below to fix the problem.
How do I clear this error message?
Assuming that the contacts are not electronically damaged or dead, you can usually get around this message by cleaning the previously mentioned contacts. I would recommend performing the following steps:
Remove the cartridge from the printer.
Turn off the printer using the buttons on the printer body. DO NOT turn it off at the connector.
Check the cartridge label to make sure the correct cartridge is installed for your printer.
Wipe the contacts on the front of the cartridge with a piece of kitchen paper or other non-fibrous tissue.
Press the printer’s power switch to turn it back on.
Reinsert the cartridge and make sure that the cartridge is back in the correct black / color area of the cradle.
With any luck, the cartridge will now be recognized by your printer and you can continue printing. However, if any of the messages E04, E05, E14 or E15 “The FINE cartridge cannot be detected” remain, the cartridge is probably damaged / defective. Unfortunately, the only option in this case is to replace the cartridge, preferably one manufactured by another party or from another batch.
If this problem has occurred with several cartridges, the corresponding contacts in the printer may be covered or even damaged. Fortunately, these contacts can be easily accessed by removing the cartridge from the printer, and they can also be cleaned with the same type of tissue. These contacts can be sharp on some printers. Therefore, be careful not to leave any pieces of tissue behind when cleaning.
